However, it has been clear for a while that the right-back is short of the quality required to make it with the Gunners. A series of loan stints, most recently in the Championship with Birmingham City, have been delaying the inevitable.

Whilst Danny Welbeck could prove to be a useful squad option for Emery to keep around, with the England international now in the final year of his contract with the Gunners, it makes more sense for the club to cash in whilst they still can.
