da brwin: Manchester United tried to secure the services of Victor Lindelof from Benfica late in the January transfer window but could not close a deal, Portuguese outlet A Bola reports.
What’s the word?
da winzada777: Linked with Manchester United for a while, 22-year-old defender Victor Lindelof was a target that Jose Mourinho’s side tried to land before the transfer window slammed shut earlier this week and the club even met with Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira.
United were looking to finalise a deal before Tuesday evening’s transfer deadline, something they failed to achieve, but the talks also discussed a potential deal this summer- which leaves the door open for the Red Devils to return at the end of the season.
With a release-clause of £25.4m, Manchester United will know what price they have to pay for the Swedish international’s services but failing to land a deal in the mid-season means that the Red Devils risk losing the defender to a continental rival.
Will he sign?
Manchester United’s strong links in Portugal, intensified by Jose Mourinho’s position as manager of the Red Devils, mean that the Premier League giants will remain favourites to land a deal heading into the summer and Benfica, as always, will be happy to sell for the right price.
With their release-clause representing a fair price for the Swedish international, Benfica are likely to hold out for that figure and the difficulty for Manchester United would only come if the Red Devils refused to match the asking price.
