da bet sport: After opting against signing Russia’s World Cup hero Denis Cheryshev back in the summer after reportedly being interested, and instead signing Bernard, Everton may start to regret that decision if the forward can do some damage against Celtic in the Europa League.
What’s the word, then?
The former Real Madrid man scored four goals in just three starts for the host nation at last summer’s World Cup, with his wonderful curling effort against runners-up Croatia being nominated for FIFA’s Puskas award.
Since the tournament, however, the Russian international has had a below-par season with Valencia in La Liga and in Europe, recording just one goal and one assist in the league.
Despite his lack of involvement in games, however, the 27-year-old can be a top player on his day and definitely has the talent in his locker – perhaps he just needs a change of scenery and a new home to unlock his skills.
Will Everton regret not signing him?
At the moment, no. The Toffees opted to sign Brazilian playmaker Bernard from Shakhtar Donetsk instead of Cheryshev, but he too has largely disappointed despite flashes of brilliance and has just a single assist to show for his efforts in the Premier League.
Marco Silva and his team may be keeping a close eye on the Europa League Round of 32 fixture when the Spanish giants take on Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic over two legs, with a view to maybe reigniting their interest in the attacker in the future.
Cheryshev will have a huge chance to prove that he is capable of taking the game by the scruff of the neck on a big European stage, something that would be attractive to the Merseysiders who are hoping to make a return to the Europa League for next season.
Should the Russian impress in the two games against the Bhoys in February, Silva and co may be kicking themselves that they opted for the ineffective Bernard instead of a World Cup star – a summer move may also be in the pipeline if he does turn up against the Scottish giants.
