da lvbet: New Lyon signing Joachim Andersen has revealed that Champions League football and a potential title race convinced him to chose Les Gones over Arsenal.
What did he say?
The Gunners were said to have been close to signing Andersen in June as part of a double-purchase with Dennis Praet. However, the latter ended up joining Premier League rivals Leicester City, whilst the former chose to move to Ligue 1.
Lyon finished third in France last season, which earned them a spot in Europe’s premier club competition this term, and the Denmark international has pinpointed that as one of the main reasons behind his decision.
He told Foot Mercato:
“There were good clubs [interested], but Lyon was the best choice for me.
“I wanted to develop as a player, play the Champions League, be in a top team that fights for the title and Lyon was the best solution.”

Lack of Champions League football could be hindrance moving forward
The Champions League is the biggest tournament in European football.
As such, Andersen’s reasons for choosing Lyon make perfect sense. The French club will be in the group stages and could even progress further. Arsenal, meanwhile, will be slugging it out in the Europa League. In terms of a title challenge, it looks even dimmer – last time out they finished 28 points behind eventual champions Manchester City.
The Gunners have now failed to finish in the top four for the past three seasons, and there is no guarantee they will make it this year either with competition fierce at the top of the Premier League. If they don’t, then more players could follow Andersen’s path and snub the Gunners in favour of Champions League sides in other countries.
