da roleta: Tottenham Hotspur are planning for life without Christian Eriksen after the Denmark international made it clear he would not sign a new contract at the club despite Jose Mourinho’s arrival as manager, per The Telegraph.
What’s the word?
The 27-year-old revealed in the summer that he wanted to leave the club for a new challenge.
His contract is currently set to expire at the end of the season and The Telegraph now reports that he is set to reject any attempts to tie him to the north London club.
As such, he could even be allowed to leave in January, with Juventus and Inter Milan both touted as potential suitors; he can agree a free transfer with a foreign club in January.
Mourinho is said to be willing to sell before he buys and is hoping to sign both a striker and a defender at the turn of the year.
The deal that needs to happen
Eriksen leaving in January would be a huge boost for Mourinho for three reasons.
Firstly, he would have the albatross removed from his neck, with the Dane’s future resolved and an option to replace him having emerged.
Secondly, he could reinvest any fee received for him, regardless of what that may be.
And thirdly, he can promote from within.
Giovani Lo Celso could be the key beneficiary of the latter. He has made just one start in the Premier League since his loan arrival from Real Betis in the summer and he can play either in central midfield or at No.10.
With Eriksen out of the way, the door will surely be ajar for Lo Celso to make an impression and potentially earn a permanent move to north London.
Meanwhile, a Spurs ace has been hailed by his international manager.
