But Wednesday fans can take comfort from the fact they still have fiery Scotsman Barry Bannan among their ranks.
He was one of the few players to deliver against the Bluebirds, claiming an assist for his troubles. It was a performance that had some fans longing for better days, suggesting that without the midfielder, the club would be nothing.
It’s certainly hard to argue with that given his record of seven assists in 2019/20. Whether that can be compared to John Sheridan, however, is another question. It’s certainly fine praise though.
Further individuals hailed Bannan for his leadership qualities and the passion he shows on the pitch. Via WhoScored, the 30-year-old has achieved an average match rating north of 7 this term, a number only beaten by Fletcher and Tom Lees.
Based on that, it’s hard to argue against one supporter’s claims that he always gives 100%. If others can follow him in his performance levels, there is a reason to believe that Wednesday could challenge for promotion this season. That, however, could be out of their hands after Chansiri’s antics.
It’s clear the club need more leaders like Bannan, who has openly criticised Fernando Forestieri this season.
There was also praise for the technical qualities the creative midfielder provides on a regular basis.
One individual hailed him as the Owls’ best player of the decade while another suggested he should be playing at a higher level. Based on his performance on Sunday, there is certainly a case to be made for that. Bannan laid on an impressive five key passes and was dispossessed just once.
Whose Line Is It Anyway: Michael Owen, Garth Crooks or Mark Lawrenson?
The experienced Scotland international signed for the Yorkshire outfit in 2015 and has since gone onto play 186 times for the club. In that period, he’s scored ten goals but racked up 31 assists, via Transfermarkt.
Meanwhile, one Wednesday star was ridiculed after the defeat against Cardiff, being described as their worst signing of the Chansiri era…
